What your Mgr can teach you

Skill

Your manager has two priorities:
1. Help you close sales;
2. Help you develop skills so closing deals is easier.

If your manager sometimes forgets their primary role, remind her/him. If you have a manager who doesn’t need reminding about #s 1 & 2…good for you.

Your manager can add value only if you are open to coaching and guidance. Get comfortable asking for coaching!

Do

Today, sit down with your manager and bring your open mind to a discussion about the one skill you need help developing.

Your manager has seen more fastballs and curveballs than anyone. They know a lot about applying skills (even though they may not know much about teaching).

If needed, guide your manager on how you best learn.

Solicit the analysis and feedback you need.

Oomph

In this YT short, Steve Jobs asks, "Why would you want to work for someone you can’t learn anything from?"

You don’t need Steve to tell you what lives deep inside you: you want a manager who inspires you, even if that means you are continuously and intensely challenged.

especially if you’re continuously and intensely challenged.

You are not obligated to win. You are obligated to keep trying to do the best you can every day.
