2/2/2024-Happy Groundhog Day

Skill
While skills are very important and needed for success in sales, wake up every day feeling like a million bucks, and you may do something that gets you that bag of cash.
On this day in 1887, the first Groundhog Day was held in Punxsutawney, PA.
Even before the famous movie starring Bill Murray, this day is synonymous with everyone getting worked up about how much winter is left in the tank.
While the ceremony remains popular, there is no quantifiable association between Punxsutawney Phil seeing its shadow and the arrival time of spring.
However, the movie – and the day’s event – provoke a deeper and positive review about what it means to live the best version of yourself.
Do
Watch Groundhog Day tonight. It’s a special movie.
Not only is it funny, but it’s tender and offers a good take on redemption and do-overs.
Unfortunately, you can’t walk back an off-the-mark statement you make to a customer.
But that’s okay. Acknowledge your mistakes. Bestow grace on yourself. Prove you’re a human. (Buyers love that!)
Do good or make mistakes…it’s all part of the journey.
Learn. Analyze. Correct. March forward.
"I have been stabbed, shot, poisoned, frozen, hung, electrocuted, and burned….and every morning I wake up without a scratch on me, not a dent in the fender… I am an immortal."
It’s a funny line from the Groundhog Day movie, and only Bill Murray could deliver it with the right combination of dryness and naive cockiness.
As a seller, it wouldn’t be bad to go around thinking you can handle being stabbed, shot, poisoned – et cetera – and still wake up every morning with enthusiasm for what you do and what you can do for your customers.
The great baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra once said – famously – “Baseball is 90% mental; the other half is physical,” and no truer words could be spoken about selling.
While skills are very important and needed for success in sales, attitude is vital.
Oomph
One could get lost watching classic clips from the movie, which strongly stands the test of time.
The scene most apt for today’s thread is titled "New and Improved Phil."
Let Bill Murray’s antics in this 3-minute clip remind you of how easy it is to be nice and enthusiastic…for the day…for your customers…for your company…and yes, even for your manager who ticked you off yesterday with an undeserved offhanded comment. (Whatever…move on.)
Quote of the day
"There is no way that this winter is ever going to end as long as this groundhog keeps seeing his shadow. I don’t see any other way out. He’s gotta be stopped. And I have to stop him." Bill Murray as Phil in Groundhog Day.
