2/3/2025-Happy Groundhog Day

Skill
While skills are very important and needed for success in sales, wake up every day feeling like a million bucks, and you may do something that gets you that bag of cash.
Yesterday was GHD…yay!
The first Groundhog Day was held in 1887 in Punxsutawney, PA. Even before the fun movie, February 2 was synonymous with everyone getting excited for a random rodent to tell us how much winter remained. (Ummm, it’s early February!!!)
While the ceremony remains popular, there is zero quantifiable association between Punxsutawney Phil seeing its shadow and the onset of spring.
However, the movie’s message reminds you to live the best version* of yourself!
"Just gimme your best," says Punxsutawney Phil.
Why not?
Do
Watch Groundhog Day again tonight. It’s a special movie that’s funny and tender. It offers a good take on redemption and do-overs.
Unfortunately, you can’t walk back an off-the-mark statement you make to a customer…or rewind a snotty response that no one deserves.
But that’s okay. You’re not perfect. Bestow grace on yourself.
Doing good and making mistakes is all part of the journey.
Learn. Analyze. Correct. March forward.
"I have been stabbed, shot, poisoned, frozen, hung, electrocuted, and burned….and every morning I wake up without a scratch on me, not a dent in the fender… I am an immortal."
It’s a funny line from the Groundhog Day movie, and only Bill Murray could deliver it with the right combination of dryness and naive cockiness.
As a seller, it wouldn’t be bad to go around thinking you can handle being stabbed, shot, poisoned – et cetera – and still wake up every morning with enthusiasm for what you do and what you can do for your customers.
The great baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra once said – famously – “Baseball is 90% mental; the other half is physical,” and no truer words could be spoken about selling.
While skills are very important and needed for success in sales, attitude is vital.
Oomph
One could get lost watching classic clips from the movie, but the scene most apt for today is titled "New and Improved Phil."
Let Bill Murray’s antics in this clip remind you of how easy it is to be nice and enthusiastic…for the day…for your customers…and even for your manager (who ticked you off yesterday…! Get over it. Be nice.)
Quote of the day
"There is no way that this winter is ever going to end as long as this groundhog keeps seeing his shadow. He’s gotta be stopped. And I have to stop him." Bill Murray as Phil Connors in Groundhog Day
