Finding a mentor should not be a temporary game just because you’re going through something hard at this time. Choosing the right mentor will open your eyes and mind over the long road.
You’re having coffee with an acquaintance you used to work with, and the more you listen, the more you love what you’re hearing.
It hits you that it would be fantastic to have a steady diet of this person to help with job and career issues.
Smart.
Every seller in the TOP 10% has a mentor…probably two or three.
As you plot your move to build your team of mentors, start preparing your list of issues you’ll want help with. Mentors need to be guided.
Do
Today, contact someone in your network who might be a good mentor and invite her/him to lunch. Mention that you need their thoughts on a few issues that you’re dealing with.
Then do it again…contact another individual who might meet the mentor profile for you. (They don’t need to know it’s a tryout for a mentoring relationship.)
Do their answers and reccos make sense to you? …is there value in what they say?
What about chemistry…how’s the rapport between you? Can you talk to this person openly?
Mentors provide immense value to sellers because they’ve seen every fastball, curve ball, and all the other pitches. They’ve been through it all.
B2B selling is one of the hardest jobs on the planet, and you will learn faster if others can teach you about skills, situational issues, manager issues, compensation, team harmony, career management, and…and….and….! The list goes on and on.
The sales life often feels like you’re in a jungle wearing nuthin’ but a loin cloth! Mentors can help you feel less vulnerable…they can help you find some clothes that fit!
Mentors are not those who like your favorite sports team or musical act…they’re serious business pros who know what you’re going through and want to help. Pick mentors who will challenge you and support you. It will pay dividends to build a mentor team with diverse perspectives…and a willingness to give the truth.
Mentors need guidance, so when you find someone to trust, direct them. Bring specific issues to them and ask for their advice. But just like your manager, mentors will best respond when you share your strategic insights and thinking.
You know when you’ve got a good mentor when you feel your mind opening broader. That’s when the learning starts.

"The point of a good teacher is that the student does pass the teacher," offers Alex Hormozi in this clip.
Perhaps his words inspire you to invest in a mentoring plan that brings you a new relationship.
Nobody does it alone.
