9/4/2023-Happy Labor Day

Skill

Yes, sales is about influencing decisions and driving revenue for your company, but mostly it’s about providing value to your clients. Today, celebrate YOU, who makes it happen for your clients.

The first U.S. Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City.

The idea for Labor Day was born from the unions of New York City, which hosted a parade to celebrate their members. At least 20,000 people were there, and – get this – the workers had to give up a day’s pay to attend.

Interestingly, and completely unrelated, Labor Day 1955 was also the first day Waffle House began operating in Avondale, GA. (It’s important to know the essential facts about this unofficial beginning of the fall season…or, if you prefer, the end of the summer season.)

Do

Today’s DO is actually a DON’T DO….!

Today, don’t work.

You work extremely hard…and you work long too. While you mostly thrive on work, you’re not a sports car that runs forever at high RPMs.

If you want to honor the concept of work today, reflect on the skills and behaviors you possess that are uniquely yours. Celebrate them and focus only on the positives.

Work is good. And days off help you appreciate work. And, as a seller of professional services, your work is noble. Where would your customers be without your product/service to help them grow?

Sales is one of the noblest professions because YOU are the hero for your clients…

YOU are the one responsible for providing the solutions they need to grow big and strong.

YOU are the one who counsels your buyers on strategies and pathways that lead to efficiencies.

YOU help your customers build value in their enterprises.

That’s a lot of YOUs!

Yes, sales is about influencing decisions and driving revenue for your company, but mostly it’s about providing value to others.

For all of this privilege, your time is flexible, and for the most part, you get to make many decisions on your own.

Is the pressure high? Yes, of course. But the rewards are proportionately in your favor, not just in the commission checks you receive, but the satisfaction and fulfillment of knowing YOU made it all happen.

You deserve this day off. Enjoy it.

Oomph

In 1894, President Cleveland signed into law this national holiday to be every first Monday in September.

In almost every other country, however, May 1 is the day of celebration for "work."

This quick 1-minute video is power-packed with a summarized history for today’s ceremonial last day of summer! (And, it’s got some cool, vintage historical film that may help you appreciate today.)

Quote of the day
